Interview: Kristen Doran, Part 2

Kristen Doran

The final part of Jason’s two part interview with Kristen Doran. There’s some interesting feedback from Kristen on fashion designers and blogging that may interest other designers considering entering the fun new online world of blogging.

You only seem to produce short runs of your prints. Is that intentional?

Yes, it’s cost driven at the moment. Basically I print what I can afford and don’t reprint until it’s just about all used up. I look forward to being able to print a lot more in the future and really broadening the range of designs available. But for the moment, it’s one small step at a time.

Let’s move on to your dresses that will be coming out. What made you decide to begin producing dresses?

I needed a frock for a Christmas bash and spent a day in Sydney trying them on. Came home with nothing and started modifying a dress pattern I had that night.

How many dress designs will you be releasing?

At the moment I have one style, with a few more in the pipeline. I like to just dip my toes in the water to see how things go, not really a jump in boots and all person.

Will you make a transition to fashion or are you planning to keep producing textile prints and accessories?

That’s a hard one. I’m just open to seeing where things take me. I have a real passion for textile prints and would like to explore that further. And what girl doesn’t like to design a good frock? So maybe it will end up being a combination of the two loves.

Are the textile designs for your dresses different from your other designs?

I haven’t used my own fabric designs on my dresses yet…

Will your dresses be available in stores or just your online store?

They are available at One Small Room in Adelaide. More stores soon I hope. I’ll announce things on my blog cheekybeaks.blogspot.com. You can check out my shop there.

Now talking about blogs. What do you think of the whole fashion designer/blog concept?

I love blogging. It pushes me to do more and experiment more.

Can you see any disadvantages as a designer for having a blog?

Not yet. I guess there’s the whole copyright issue. But that’s just a form of flattery isn’t it?

Thanks a lot for your time. I am looking forward to seeing more textile and clothing designs in the future.
